i wanted to know if i could catch a virus from downloading .mp3 files? i want to start downloading some.

I´m no expert, but i strongly belive that you can get viruses from any kind of file, but someone else will have to give you a final answer.

As a matter of course you should make sure that you have a software firewall and up to date anti virus suite on your PC MINIMUM if you are going to do anything on the internet (connect to it, collect e-mail, download anything).

The specific risks with donwloading .mp3 files are similar to any other type of download but probably less risky than downloading e-mail into a microsoft mail client (outlook/outlook express).

AVG is a well thought of free virus suite and Zone alarm is a competent if basic firewall (also free) if you are on a tight budget.

Personally I use Norton Internet Security Suite which I have found to be excellent.

I´from Sweden, and not completely into the american expresions (Metalwork files?), so I´m afraid the main point of your comment went right past me

Even with the Queens english as my native tongue I had to read that a couple of times to get what the hell he was on about...

I.e. a metalwork file being a tool used in metalwork (not a computer file) therefore not prone to spreading viruses.
