Hi all
Hope alls well with you in cyber land. Well I’ve finally got a mix up loaded after nearly 12 months with the program. Over the last 12 months I’ve had a Laptop go, two hard drives go down, lost all my music due to no backup (I know, lesson learned, the hard way). And the rest of my time has been spent trying to get me head around the program and leaning new ways of doing things (I’m old school, SL1210s, Reel Too Reel, Akai S900, oh and them things we use to call records). Anyway its here my first mix and I must dedicate this to the people I’ve drove nuts over the last couple of days, Theodore Remington Rooks ~ The man with a sick sense of humour, Nebulus ~ My new Southern mate. MadameFLY ~ The girl I’m going to make my cyber wife Thank you all for putting up with me and my daft questions. This mix is called Chronicles Vol 1, it contains 17 great tracks in one hour, from the likes of Danny Howells, Stonebridge, Inaya Day, Freemasons and Jakatta along with a shed full of film samples. This is my first mix after being away from mixing for nearly twenty years (see photo from back in the day, 1991, Im the one on the right trying to look cool), (also bare in mind, back then we didn’t do Harmonics, although i dont think i did bad with them in this mix). Please feel free to comment on what you hear, all forms of feedback will be very much appreciated. I would also like to add, over the last couple of months I have been listening to quite a lot of your mixes, the talent on this forum is awesome. This mix might not quite come up too standard, but give me some time and hopefully I’ll get there. Enjoy! This message has been edited. Hi DJ Lodown,
Now thats what i call a setup, loving it. It breaks my heart and i'm not selling it. Are they Newmark Decks? My setup consisted of two SL1210S, Citronic Trent Mixer, Akai S950 Sampler, Roland 4 Track Reel Too Reel, Roland R8 Drum Machine, Roland D5 Keyboard, 2 x Denon CD Decks, Yamaha Seqencer and a 16 track Midi Mixer. It broke my heart when i had to sell it. The only remnenants of it is an SL1210LTD I got with some of the money from the sale of the gear. Its still my baby. Heres a thing, 12 months ago my son who was then 7 asked me what it was. I explain it was a turntable and what it did. I told him to go and get one of those plastic things and put it on. He got the War OF The Worlds album, put it on and was amazed. Since then he has slowly but surely worked his way through my record collection. Another DJ in the family, who knows, all i can say is nobody in his school comes near his knowlage on music. As a result of the above i took him to the Jeff Wayne, War of the Worlds show and for some reason he came out of there wanting to play the flute, (yeh i know, odd). Hes been on it now for six months and i can't believe how quick hes learning it (all down to SL1210, work that one out). With regards to Reel Too Reels and mixing, the main man here who brought the art of mixing back from the States was Greg Wilson and he still uses them today. Growing up in the eighties he was my hero and i longed to be like him, hes a god. I did get the pleasure of spending a day with him, he's the nicest guy you will ever meet. I came out of his office holding his whole back catalog in my arms. He single handedly established Electro Funk in this country and was responsible for Electro 4 the only UK Electro complination album released. Not many people know this but he did every track on the album. Check out his site http://www.electrofunkroots.co.uk Remind me some time to tell you of how i met Greg, its a freaky story. Whats your kit consist off? Gimmi the rundown on it. I'm loving the look of it. Why are you selling. I'm also loving this mix of yours (Nice, like the jazz). While i'm on this, (to the rest of you out there), give us the run down on the gear your using. Thanks for the remarks and hope alls well with you all on the other side of the big pond. I understand the Nerves... trust me! These fellas and ladies ( Madame Fly ) are top notch. Everyone makes you want to create something better each time. Reading your intro reminded me of what happened when I first started with Mixmeister. I lost all of my music and had to repurchase not once but 2x. Needless to say Boogie and I have backup overkill ( 1.1 terabytes of external storage ) |

The people have been great with me. Always ready to help and have made it really easy to get into the program.
As for the nerves, theres some killer stuff on here and i can't believe that mixing has come on so much. Your on the button when you say it makes you want to lift your game. As for back ups, i've got back ups of back ups of back ups. I dont want that pain again, i lost 6 months because of it. Whatup -- Ged-I... Hiya feel??...
Yes sirrr, that's my current setup. Just a lil something to go on. I wasn't planning on spending a fortune on three Technics SL-1210s, a Rane or Urei Mixer, etc.. So I figured, what the hell!!... Let me get my mock on... And wisely, I saved big-time!!! Snatched up, 3 Numark TT200 Direct drive joints... Grabbed me up one of those Numark CDN90 Dual CD players... And found me a Numark DM1920x “House Music Style” Rotary Mixer... Then added a few other pieces, to put things in perspective... lol, I built me a smooth riding Lexus-set, with Toyota parts... I always tell my crew, you don't really need a fancy comb to groom your hair... If need be, you can use a plastic folk to get the job done... Overall, I never really used this stuff anyhow, it just sat in my basement to look cool. This is why I've decided to sale/pluck it to the curb... I really do enjoy mixing music, but I don't have a pro-like attitude attached with it. I'm strictly a hobbyist... However, I still consider myself to be a music head!!! I love music (all types); But if it was my true desire, to proclaim a career in music, it would definitely be on the creative side... More-so, Production - If you will... This DJ $hit, comes with an overwhelming amount of hate!! Especially through-out the House Music arena... Annnyway, I see your work G... I see your debut mix, made a lil noise (via the message board). Ya even got some thumbs up, from some of the J2I heavy hitters... Good thing - Ged... Congrads... I didn't get a chance to catch your mix yet, but I hope to get-it-in sometime today... Enjoy ur Sunday - Homez... Will get @-cha soon... Hi Lodown
Hope ya had a great weekend. With regards to your kit. What’s killing me with all this new technology is the fact that it makes everything so redundant. My kit (at the time) cost me the best part of £7,000.00, you can get the lot now on a laptop for less than £1500.00. I have two problems with all of this, a laptop with never look or feel as good (see your photo). But as you rightly say “you don't really need a fancy comb to groom your hair... If need be, you can use a plastic folk to get the job done... Your right, but come on it will never look or feel as good……will it? That said, technology has moved on and so should we. There are so many advantages to moving with it. Let’s just look at one example that reflects on what we do here. Twenty years ago I looked at taking a mix to vinyl, It would have cost over £1500.00 to get a 100 copies pressed up. Technology today puts this to shame. DJ Mojito asked in a recent thread, should he learn to mix with turntables or stick with the PC? My answer…….well my heart says (and always will say) sick with the turntables, but my head tells me to run as fast as I can with technology. With to regards to sets, Heard your set the other day……..nice. How can I get my hands on a copy? This is the problem I want copies of 80% of what I hear. The one thing I do love about this site is the fact that I’ve gone from being a geek completely isolated in a back bedroom doing my thing, to the same geek still doing my thing, but now I can share my material, thoughts, love and passion on this subject with people from all over the world and get some honest and constructive feedback. I was nervous about how my stuff would go down, but all seems good. Hope you get the chance to check my mix, your valued opinion would be very much appreciated. Feel free to drop me a line anytime to talk about anything. And look after yourself. Ps, I’m still crying over your gear having to hit the curb. This message has been edited. Wooow! You guys rock! Can I come around and we mix together the night away?
I have heard your set yesterday, dear Ged-I: fantastic! I only think those voices-overs were a bit bothersome, perhaps a matter of taste! I have heard the Freemasons in your set. I know a few tracks now from them in this year. Who are those guys? They make brilliant funk! Really a good set! You are more than welcome here! |
