The fourth installment of my Going Deeper series has just gone on rotation. Style wise its a set of jazzy, funky deep house. It includes tracks/remixes from Jay-J And Halo, Inland Knights, Chuck Love, Copyright & Mario Fabriani (AKA Joey Youngman).

I hope you all enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

You get to listen to music in work? Thats sweet. All I get to listen to in work is abuse from members of the public (I work in a local government job). Jason

Anyway im glad you enjoyed the mix and I look forward to hearing one of your sets sometime soon.

Dani,

This is a fantastic set, indeed. And your harmonic choices were spot on--very strong tonic to dominant and dominant to tonic relationships in an adherence to strict music theory constructs.

I've always thought that your natural harmonic ear was good. I've never heard anything other than that with respect to your sets. So, I was surprised when you mentioned in your PM to me that you had utilized some the basic information I originally presented here when working on this set. I did hear the very strong harmonic choices that you made. Good stuff!

And, thank you for your compliments! I actually have been trying to put together a working tutorial on "Traditional Harmonic Mixing" for the DJ in a coordianted fashion for some time. Something that goes beyond that basic information that I've presented in bits and pieces here and there. My difficulty lies in communicating the right information with respect to DJ needs--studies in theory can get very complex, and I'm trying to figure out how to communicate traditional harmony to the uninitiated without going overboard. On top of that, just the day-to-day issues of life and this place--our hoppin' schedule these days have prevented me from focusing on that task.

But, it is on my hitlist and I will eventually put together some chapters that we pin somewhere. However, I think given your use of this information, you might also care to check out this post from a set I did last spring. I think, given your understanding of the traditional dominant tonic progressive relationships, you might find the polymodal technique interesting as well. It tends to require modern deep/garage or modern progressive house, with strong asymmetric relationships. If you're interested, PM me and I'll try to explain polymodalism in more detail.

Thanks!

Tim,

I've been using basic harmonic mixing in my sets for some time now (i.e. mixing tracks of the same key together as much as possible) however I wasnt following any harmonic progression as such and certainly knew nothing of dissonant harmonic modulation. Thats why your guide was so useful to me and may be for others too.

Thanks for the feedback and im glad you enjoyed the set. I just found out that my new PC is ready for collection at my local post office so once I have that set up I will be cranking out some more sets.
