Duke,
This is now your 2nd submission here, and it's good. I think I'm getting a good idea of where you're coming from. In terms of your musical taste, I'm detecting something a bit different than I hear from the rest of the DJs, and I suspect that is based on the area of the UK where you're from. I don't really know much about the musical culture of West Yorkshire, but I was up in that area last year on a visit to the UK, and I found the people to be very friendly and more laid back than in London. That's definitely not to say that I don't like Londoners. Outside of Chicago, London is my favorite city on the planet and I try to get back there as often as possible. But, the West Yorkshire region is a lovely place, and the tone of your sets to date has reflected that vibe, and I really enjoy them. On top of this, I find that you have a very good ear for harmonic transitions, and I rarely take issue with your harmonic choices. That said, I would like to offer you some suggestions in terms of your stylistic focus that I think will help you turn good sets into great sets. First of all, your musical taste is different, and in your case, different is good. Don't feel like you have to necessarily spin what others are spinning. Across the board, I applaud your choices. Perhaps they are regional. Perhaps they're not what people are spinning in London or Chicago or New York, but they're excellent, valid choices nonetheless. I would like to hear you retain the character of your sets. Specifically, I would say, that for this reason, I preferred your first submission to J2I over your current one. I was excited to hear a trend toward the Eurodance sound in your original mix that I still detect somewhat in this one, albeit a bit less. House may have originated in Chicago and New York, and then while London has also joined the fray as "centers" of dance music, in this day and age "echt" House music is an international phenomenon. That said, we really need a good perspective on the Eurodance and alternative European styles in our radio rotation here. Whether that be from the Italo or French styles, styles from Eastern Europe (like Snake Sedrick, etc.), styles from the other regions of the UK, outside of London, or whatever, that particular perspective is lacking somewhat in our representation here, and I would like to see more of it. So, if you have got a unique perspective on artists of that nature, bring them to the mix, so to speak, and don't worry about what the rest of us are bringing to the table. Look for styles that bring a unique character and cohesion to your sets and stick with them! It will help you to "stick out from the crowd" and come to discover your own, very personal DJ style. Thanks! Tim Tim, Co-host of Jack2It MMRadio |
