Something that I have been thinking about that I thought I would throw open to the community...

There are a lot of people here with a lot of different styles (or flavours to some of you Big Grin ) but if you were to pick the one tune that sums up a specific genre what would it be? Assuming someone had never heard a specific style of music and you had 1 tune to show them everything that was good about it what would you play them?

Poster first rule so here we go:

On the Psy-Trance tip (Goa if you must) then its got to be "We Are Free" by Doof - it still sends shivers down my spine seven years on and I have played it a lot!

For bangin' techno then Scot Project's "U" takes the gong...

...and finally just to be different the tune that sums up the psychadelic rock genre for Monkey Do is Ozric Tentacles "Dissolution"

I normally hate to pigeonhole but for some reason I just couldn't resist...must be the beer

I'd have to split the TripHop category into two:

Portishead: Sour Times (Lot More Mix) for the deep dark triphop sound

and

Massive Attack: Safe From Harm for the other side (maybe you'd call it sweeter or lighter...?)

For downtempo, you'd expect me to choose almost anything K&D, like the K&D remix of Bug Powder Dust by Bomb the Bass ... but I might just have to go for Cinematic Orchestra's Channel One Suite: a bit more obscure but really perfect.

Atmospheric Drum'n'Bass: has to go to PFM's One and Only or Danny's Song, followed close by Omni Trio's Haunted Kind.

Monkey-Do, having to choose like this is really too cruel, ya know....

This exercise reminds me of a similar one proposed by a guy on www.artofthemix.org, who asked ppl to supply him with a CD with our all-time "essential" tracks on it. I put one together for him (unmixed) and also wrote it up for my website. Here's the link for anyone curious enough to check it out:

Essential Tracks

This isn't sorted out by genre, it's a straight-up "best" list.

MadameFLY, how did I forget to list Portishead?

People tend to step over triphop like it was a dust bunnie that just rolled out from under the couch ... yet there's some awfully good music in that genre. It was painful to narrow it down to just one (you see that I couldn't actually do that... Roll Eyes )

MadameFLY,

Tower Records once ran a series similar to this, they called it Desert Island Discs. My essentials have not changed since I last submitted my treasures, the essentials have only grown in numbers.

As the 1st post of this twist, what's my limit for essentials?

The limit back in the Tower Records days was 10! But with the advent of wma files, the quick math suggests I could put together 200 hours of music! Not nearly enought, but it's a start!

MadameFLY,

I think your right about Trip Hop but I have to admit it's a strong force for me. I have many Trip Hop CD's and at one time that's all I listened to.

Unfortunately I haven't come across many Trip Hop tracks in the last few years.....

If you could provide some info on current artists I would much appreciate it!

BTW… Portishead / Sour Times

I’m ashamed I didn’t include it on my previous list.

Back when I considered myself interested primarily in TripHop, these were some of the sets I put together:

quote:

St. Etienne/Monkey Mafia: Filthy
Lamb: Cotton Wool remix
BlueroomReleased /Juno Reactor: Magnetic
Massive Attack: Teardrop
Morcheeba: Killer Hippie
Sly & Robbie: Fatigue Chic
Tricky: Ponderosa
Portishead: Numb
Lamb: TransFattyAcid
Psilonaut: 3rd from the Sun
Rollercone: Rester Evielle
Massive Attack: Sly (7 Stones mix)
Drum Club: Reefer

David Holmes: Gone
Andrea Parker: Melodious Thunk
Omni Trio: Sound System
U.N.K.L.E.: Be There (KZA & Kent remix)
Massive Attack: Angel (Mad Professor remix)
Lamb: Five
Swayzak: Bueno
Everything But the Girl: Walking Wounded
(Springheel Jack Dub remix)
Scuba: Drowning Astronaut

Heights of Abraham: Make Love
Banco de Gaia: Maya
The Drum Club: One Tribe
Optica: DolceVita
FSOL: Dirty Shadows
RHC feat. Plavka: Move Ya (Born Free Mix)
FSOL: Amoeba
Deadbeats: Feel Good
Tricky: Suffocated Love
Karma de la Luna: Tycho Dreams
FSOL: Expander
Heights of Abraham: 700 Channels

Of course, there's stuff there that is arguably not considered strictly (or exclusively) TripHop like the Juno Reactor, the Banco de Gaia or the Swayzak track... But I always thought TripHop was a pretty elastic category.

The problem with citing new TripHop is that the category got over-hyped and artists started backing away, saying "hey, we're not triphop" like it was the disease of the week. So, today, there's a lot of downtempo and dub and atmospheric DnB that might have been called TripHop back in the day ... but not now.

But since we both agree that there was some mighty fine music in the TripHop category (whatever the heck it was...) let's advise each other when we come across something that seems to fit the definition as we know it, and let's keep the flame alive Wink

Well its been a few days since I started this thread and its the first time that I have been back since and its cool to see what people have come up with.

TF - Strings of Life...fantastic track, its somehow one of those tunes that I never managed to own but sort of think I should.

MadameFLY - Triphop...you're right about it being an elastic genre, judging by your list I own a lot of Triphop that I never realised was Smile . Of the non-triphop stuff on your list I have a lot of Blue Room Released stuff (Juno, Etnica and Total Eclipse mainly)...Loverly. And Banco De Gaia...Just been trying to rip Shanti from my battered Desert Wind E.P. and its not working Frown
I really wanted to use that tune too Mad

Anyway, to expand the topic a bit...Desert Island Live Sets. If you could re-experience any single set (the experience of actually being there rather than on CD) what would it be?

For me its Green Nuns of the Revolution at the first Tribal Gathering. At one point the smoke and strobe lights came on so thick that you couldn't see your hands in front of your face, all that existed was the music...total sensory deprivation, like a ravers flotation tank. Fantastic.

I have two of 'em. I list them in rank order. Much to my chagrin, they do NOT involve my beloved Book Of Love. Frown

1)Information Society because of the overall experience.

Information Society in a tiny club in Seattle promoting their Peace & Love, Inc. album. There was NO stage and 100,000 watts of power. I danced two feet from the band. There was a vast array of electric drums all programmed with what must have been a million different sounds and samples. The night was electric and I was dancing on clouds. Loud, loud, high fidelity, high energy Information Society music filled the room---I danced.

2)Depeche Mode because of the record setting sound levels.
Depeche Mode 1990 or 1991 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Through connections the 6 of us that attended had 2 full rows all to ourselves stage level, 45 degrees off center to the right---this left plenty of room for dancing.

The first record setting sound level was from Nitzer Ebb. Nitzer Ebb was one of the opening acts. Can you say The Zulu Mix of Fun To Be Had! To this day I have never heard as loud of bass as I did from Nitzer Ebb. (And, yes I have been to SPL sound offs!!!)

The second record setting sound level was from the Depeche Mode crowd. The cheer (ie. screams, roars, blood, sweat, tears, claps...) the crowd gave for the second Depeche Mode encore was hands down the loudest sound I have ever heard. (Again, yes I have been to SPL sound offs!) The sound was loud enough to cause serious ear pain; I nearly vomited; and I was physically sick all the way back to Seattle after the show!
