I usually use Traktor to DJ but need to put together a quick CD and I'd rather use Studio to create the mix. I've learned how to do a lot of the transition tweaks successfully, but I'm stumped the the simplest way to level out the volume across different MP3s. Seems the volume markers are designed for intra-track tweaking, and I want to set one gain adjustment for the whole mp3 so the perceived volume of all the MP3s is the same. I don't usually used MP3gain because Traktor does it's own gain assessment. I don't mind manually assigning it, but don't want it to show up as an intra-track tweak. Is there a way?

Hey djadama,
If MP3Gain is off your list, how about using a limiter on the whole mix to limit the peaks? Limiters I've used can also boost the "lows" somewhat as well. If you need a freebie, then try the Kjaerhus Master Limiter - check out this thread for some background if you need it (plus search beatmixing.com for the same .... you'll find loads of stuff on it). Also, you may find the IzotopeMP plugin that comes bundled with Studio7/Fusion might be useful. Hope that helps, Neb. |

Thanks, Nebulus. I actually pulled the playlist tracks out and ran MP3gain on them, but despite the commentator in the thread you referenced, Studio doesn't seem to see the volume leveling, even if I delete the track from the playlist and re-add. Do I have to delete from the library and re-add/rescan? I hope not. A playlist in winamp of those same tracks plays quite evenly, and I can see the rplaygain in the tags. Next step is the Kjaerhus Master Limiter, but so far, no luck.

No ... as long as you are MP3Gain'ing the MP3 files that your MM library uses then you won't need delete/re-add. Is the volume issue you are having audibly noticeable, or is it that the VU meters peak noticeably higher on some tracks? In any case, I think a compressor/limiter will help you. If you're new to compression/limiting definitely try the Kjaerhus limiter - it is really easy to use and gives good results in relation to it's simplicity and cost (i.e. free). Let us know how you get on. Neb. |

Thanks, Nebulus. It's amazing what staying up til 4am will teach one. I've been able to do a lot of levelling inside the tracks. I do have that limiter and will apply it later. Meanwhile, I've searched on joining segments, and seen a lot of wishlist items. If I just want to suck a 16 bar segment out of a too-long song, any easy way to rejoin the separated segments?

Yes ... I cannot see a way of doing this. The Fusion helpfile says the following: To merge two segments into one: 1. In the Timeline, click a song that you've already split into two or more segments. 2. Drag the edge of the first segment so it covers the entire second segment. 3. Repeat Step 2 as necessary. But I've never managed to get this to work. Might be bug, or something I'm not doing right. If it's the latter, then can some bright spark please illuminate us here? (Fusion 7.2.2.0 on Win XP SP2, btw) djadama - let us know how you get on with the limiter. Thanks, Neb. |
