We trained him wrong...you know, for a joke

note: this tute is supposed to have more screenshots but I mucked them up - I'll re-do them later

Remember how effects worked in Pro6? You could apply a track effect marker and then drag the edges to fade it in and out effectively adjusting the wet/dry or mix amount of the effect.

This approach had one drawback - effects often had more parameters to play with and these had to be adjusted in realtime.

Well not any more, with the new implementation of the VST effects in Fusion you can use the effects markers to automate any control the effect developer has decided to include.

For this example I'm playing about with the included DJ Eq as it has a few knobs to fiddle with (ooo-errr).

First let's add a track to the playlist. I'm using Fusion but this also works in Studio 7.

Next add an effect. You'll see the DJ Graphic EQ has 9 controls.

You'll see that on the left of the effects strip are 2 dropdown menus. If you click the lower one where it says "Enable/Bypass" you will get a list of all the available effects parameters.

You can use this to select which parameter you are automating. Pick one - for example the 1khz parameter and then click the track in the timeline and press E to add an effects marker.

Place the marker at the bottom of the track to set the parameter to 0, then add another effect marker and move it all the way to the top and right a bit.

This sets up automation to emulate turning the 1khz control all the way from the left to the right over the time between the 2 markers.

Now choose another parameter and do the same again.

You'll see that all the controls you've added automation for have an asterix next to them in the drop down menu.

Play it back and listen to the wacky effect automation you've done.

Don't worry if you mess up - the 2 buttons below the drop-downs allow you to clear automation for the effect.

If you really want to get clever you can apply multiple effects and automate each parameter in them independently over the same section of playback - something that would only be possible realtime if you were an octopus.

Have Fun.
