I made a LONG, DETAILED mix. It was half an hour long, took about three hours to put together. I finished it, and went to go work on a new mix.

So I went File...Close. It created a "new" file (so I thought). However the filename within the program for some reason stayed the same. So when I just by habit hit Ctrl+S to save, rather than prompt me for a new filename, it OVERWROTE my previous file! I tried to "undo" but I had made too many changes in the new file to undo back to the old one.

Bummer...
Next time, try 'FILE', then 'SAVE AS' and enter a name for your mix.

When i edit my mixes, i click on "save" every 1-5 minutes. 3 hours without saving is some kind of careless.

By the way: if you create a new mix, it is "untitled". If you save an "untitled" mix for the first time, you are asked to enter a name for the new mix. You do not have to choose "save as" - just click on the small floppy disk. After you saved your mix and you click on "new", the new mix is untitled again and so on...

The only bug i can see here is that there is no safety confirmation if you created a new mix, never saved it and then you create another new mix. Your unsaved work is completely wiped out without any warning. In this situation, there should be a confirmation window like "Do you want to save your previous changes to this mix?".

O.k. - i see: "Close playlist" lets the name of the mix unchanged. But you see the name of the current playlist in the window title. Why do you use this function when you like to create a "new" mix? You do not need to click on any menu item in the file menu if you want to create a new mix / save an existing mix / open an existing mix. When you want to create a new mix, why don't you click on "new"? This is logical and intuitive. The menu item "Close playlist" should be removed cause it is dangerous if you use it.

Anyway, it is very anoying, if you loose 3 hours of work.

Maybe it's just 15 years of living in Florida with these honkin' big lightning storms all summer, but I do the same ... (if it's a complex mix w/ a complex "tree" of choices, each save gets a distinct name so I can go back if the choices aren't productive.)

BTW, the undo function is very deep, and it will restore a closed mix to the screen if that is part of the steps within the undo "window" (I don't actually remember how many steps back are available, but I'm thinking it's a very big number).

It is a huge number and has saved my arse countless times....But you must always save when you reach a quick stopping point...it's like using a computer for word processing...SAVE SAVE SAVE! I've run risks for too long by not saving...Take my set "Mobility 3"...have you all seen it? NO, because I forgot to save it as a .mmp....I exported it...exported it to tracks (I have copies..just haven't cheated the mix back together again w/ the track CD yet)...then I went to work on "Searching for Eternity" and *POOF* it was gone. I'm such a tard...

I save constantly. The problem was that my new mix overwrote my old one, because when you go File...Close, it keeps the same filename as your old mix, while making it appear as if you're working on a new file.

I also had run out of undo levels, of which there appear to be 99.

Theoretically, Close should have the same functionality as New, but that would be redundant, so it should probably be removed as SnoopyDog said, either that or fixed.

Actually, I think Close should have the same functionality as Exiting via the X box in the upper right hand corner of the appln window (and so should Exit from the File menu.)

If you have made a change to a saved mix, and click the X, you will see a dialog asking if you would like to save your changes to the mix ... Yes, No, or Cancel. It would be logical for Exit thru the File menu option to offer exactly the same dialog window, but it doesn't; and by extension, if exit (which closes a mix) offers that dialog window, so should Close (which also closes a mix.)

And if you Close a mix, then the appln state should revert to the same blank slate as you see with New. I can't come up with a logical reason why Close should leave the mix title on the appln title bar and the mix subject to being overwritten.

Although you can UNDO out of this situation, if you've gone too far in your new mix, then, as noted, you're s.o.l.

While these are not technically bugs (since I believe the current functionality is by design) nonetheless they are illogical design choices that could benefit from being rethought.

Thanks for raising the issue, JP.

Traditionally, "Close" is used in MDI (Multiple Document Interface) applications. Programs like MS Word that can have more than one file open at a time. The main window is an MDI window, and you can have many different projects open that you can minimize and move around inside the main window (cascade, tile, etc). I believe this is the behavior that MadameFLY is expecting out of the Close function.

However, MM is NOT a MDI application, so it is quite possible that Close is a redundant command. It would be AWESOME if the next version was MDI capable and had some sort of batch exporting. But until then... ;-)

Wow! what a cool idea!

That hadn't ever occured to me before, but it would make it so easy on my current project - an All Mixxed Up style mix of 80's & 90's tunes, so far it's about 4 hours long with some 210 audio components. For ease I've done this as 2 separate mixes and then joined them into one. To do this, I had to open, copy all, close, open the new master, paste, save, close, open the next mix, copy all, close, open the master, paste, save, close etc etc.

MDI would make it easier to switch between mixes and copy/paste much quicker.

Superb idea JP - why not stick it into one of the wishlist threads?

Well...in MM 6 (Studio & Pro) you can open up several instances of Mixmeister...i've done it plenty of times to great effect (rather convenient to work on two different parts of the mix concurrently... Wink).
