Okay, I'm looking for your input on this one. Please list your top 10 most used functions or most important functions in MMP5. Please list them in rank order, number one first. And then give a little description of what you do with it. Yes. I realize this may mean you list BeatMixing, but I am curious to see if there may be an efficient way of using MM with respect to these functions---in the live DJ situation. For example, do you switch video clips more than switching categories looking for songs? Do you use the Timeline track volume sliders more than Volume Markers? Do you add volume markers more than tweaking the Inner Sprockets?

JET,
I'll take a go here. Here is what I use and dont use in a Live scenario. (I will try to make it most used to least used)

USE
-Catalog organization
-BPM organization
-Video montage
-Sprocket adjustments
-Track presets (saved)
-Cut & paste, or split segments and delete breaks in songs
-Auto beat mix

DONT USE
-Adding plug-ins on the fly (except for the universal plug in)
-Reverse (would like to use more live)
-Appending playlists (the hesitation load factor scares me, personally)
-Volume sliders (I dont use them much Live because I have two other devices with output gain controls)

One thing I would love to see in the next version of MM:

An overall BPM Pitch control for all tracks entered into perform. I find that I am constantly adjusting each track 2-5% in BPM to make the tracks a little more upbeat. That feature would be awesome.

Anyway, theres my .02

TRIP

Thanx for the input. There were a couple of things that surprised me. Of the commonly used features, which seem troublesome to access during a live gig? Andre and Mav, surely you can honestly think of a few.

Again, my focus here is during a "live gig" where the pressure is on.

The mix immediately to feature. That is the only thing, I can't seem to have work correctly. It is a trainwreck waiting to happen if you have your tracks in beatmixing mode.

Also, I wish I can ajdust plugins or global plugins while I can also play back the track I am working on. I hate having to quit the window of the plugin then going over to the track and then going back and trying to remember what I want in that special spot.

Also, I wish MM5 would support being able to open as many MM5 windows like other programs. Let's say I am working on a new Megamix. And I want to edit the portion of the next track that I will be using. I could use the other UI to to the editing. And then when I am done, burn the clip to wma format. Then import it to my megamix. That would be cool! Instead having to save the current playlist. Then having to work on the edit, to find it doesn't fit!

Plus all the wishlist items I have asked for in Pro 5 in the forum.

That's it for now. Hope that helps.

Pause? Well pause I guess. That one is fine with me. What are you thinking it should do?

That's quite alright, even though I was racking my brain for a long while there, with the idea of what other purpose should the Pause button have? Razz

Mix Into Next Song Immediately

I have requested sometime back in the wishlist to be able to use the skip buttons in perform mode. This way one can quickly jump to the next track in a live scenario, without having it to try to fade in and fade out or beatmix in and out in beatmix mode.

The only thing I can suggest if they ever wanted to develop a perfect Mix Into Next Song Immediately. Is if they would be able to make the song that is playing jump to the start of first outer sprocket of the beatmixing range of the song. This way it would be in synch with the next track.

Maybe they could also make it that no matter where your press this button in the song. It would jump to that point seamlessly at the beginning of the next available beatmixing measure. This way it would be on beat when it makes the seamless jump to the beginning of the outer beatmixing range.

I still wish you guys would add a feature that used some type of midi signal to trigger a second laptop when one playlist has come to the end.

Also, I do 5 different clubs a week. I wish there was a way to save montage presets. I have hundreds of clips and pics, and it sucks having to reload them each night.

This sounds strange, but I also wish there was a way to control the following:
Say the song mixing OUT has 16 measures- The song mixing in has only 8 marked. I wish you could make the song coming in mix during the FIRST 8 measures and fade on the fly (Like a right click option) instead of waiting for the last 8. Makes LONG boring breaks sometimes. This is probably something only I would appreciate.

Also, a couple of video effects.. BUT something simple.. Like GREEN\BLUE chroma keying. Then I could put logos OVER the videos.

AND- last.. If you can't easily make video transitions.. Why not just make the screen split 50/50 horizontally showing both videos as they mix. This is something we could do manually (among HUNDREDS of other transitions) with the midi triggering function and the use of my Edirol V4 video mixer and 2 laptops..

Thanks!

There is an obvious workaround to this. I too had wondered how to do this. What I do is put just one single mp3 on the playlist. Then I load up my clips of the montage. Save that playlist to name the style of the montage.

I then when I either start this playlist or append it. I just replace that single track and load up my tracks. Try it. The track only exists to be able to save the playlist.

Good idea Andre. You could even set the track as an Overlay with zero volume. You may not have to delete the track that way.

Thanx...for the input. Your suggestions are great. We should have them in the wishlist section (no problem, we can copy them to over there later). What I am really interested in is how you use the existing features. You say you DJ 5 different clubs a week (that's totally awesome!!!!), what 10 or so functions do you always use? Are any of these functions tricky to get to in a "live" situation?

Well- off the top of my head:
I LOVE how you can assign individual sprockets to make the mix perfect!
I LOVE how you can use DX effects on individual tracks (and even certain PARTS of the track) would be cool if you could find a way to add more than one effect per track- sometimes I'd like to use a flange on the mix in, and eq the bass out of the end..
The montage builder is heaven sent (Though it would be COOL if you could control how many measures the slides stay up. some clips go away too quickly)
I like the way you can split a song just in case it doesn't work out the way you planned with the crowd.
The catalogue is nice..
The time compression/expansion is far more than acceptable for live use!
If I think of more I'll post it..

I do 5 clubs in 4 cities each week: All with 1000-3000 people. Mixmeister is the most reliable software I've seen- even more reliable than my over-used CD's a lot of times!
I also have a radio mixshow for Entercom Communications which is now programmed completely in MMPro5. All I can say is THANKS!

I use 2 laptops (200GB external HDs), two 9' x 12' rear projection video screens, two 2600 lumen projectors, and an Edirol V-4 video mixer. This software will be the closest thing to PERFECT if we ever get a chance to link the laptops via midi to read sprockets and tempos from each other. When this happens, we won't even need video transitions built in. We can do them with the video mixer..

Thank you for the fantastic e-mail!

With Pro 5 you can layer the effects in the Timeline. Simply highlight a portion within an existing Effects Range, right click and Add your next Plug-in. I would layer the effects longest first to shortest last so you can select the appropriate effect if you want to adjust its properties.
