The HTML .asx links on the radio players are designed to work default with web browsers to open Windows Media Player only and play the streams. However, many applications can surreptitiously and improperly take control of these and break that native browser functionality, causing you to have to reset that functionality in the file types menu in your control panel in order to get them to work correctly again.
In lieu of correcting that in Windows, often the easiest thing to do is to open the links manually in Windows Media Player as follows:
1. Open Windows Media Player
2. Goto File>>Open URL
3. In the Open URL Box that pops up type one of the following MMS URLs, based on which station you would like listen to:
(For Jack2It, type)
mms://radio.beatmixing.com:7020
(For Translucent, type
mms://radio.beatmixing.com:7022
(For All Mixed Up, type)
mms://radio.beatmixing.com:7024
(For Beat Conscious, type)
mms://radio.beatmixing.com:7026
(For Selector's Choice, type)
mms://radio.beatmixing.com:7028
4. Click OK
Windows Media Player is not native to OS X or Linux, and in order play the streams in those operating systems, you will need a 3rd party application, like VLC media player, available here:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/1. Download and install the VLC media player appropriate to your Operating System.
2. Start the VLC media player.
3. Goto File>>Open Network Stream
4. Select (click) the radio button beside "HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS."
5. In the box there, enter one of the URLs (listed above) for the radio stream of your choice
6. Click OK.
VLC will also run on Windows (download and install correct version) if you would like an alternative player to Windows Media.
A variety of (but not all) other players will also play MMS radio streams, including Winamp. For information on opening the radio streams in Winamp and other applications, please use the URLs above and consult the documentation that comes with your particular player to determine compatibility as well as the application's particular procedure for opening these streams.
Windows Media Player 9 is also available as a separate add-on for OS X users, and can also be configured to open MMS streams in OS X. However, the functionality is less than ideal as every time a particular DJ mixset ends, you have to re-invoke the stream to start it up again. It is also more difficult to install, setup and configure than the VLC media player above, as VLC will just install and work.
That should pretty much sum it up for instructions on how to open streams manually in Windows as well as on other operating system platforms.
Thanks!
