One of the fun things about language is how we can play with the ambiguity that's built into lots of words we use ... for instance, this mix: Does the title mean "I made this for you, with love" ... or does it perhaps mean "That's it! I'm finished, I'm done with love" ? It's little things like that which make art into a personal experience, because YOU get to make the call on what it means....
There's a little ambiguity in the track selection on this mix also (nice concept segue there, huh?) I started out with the idea of trying out the improved sound quality of Studio 7.1.1 by going back into the jazz crates and looking to use more of those mostly-acoustic (piano, guitar, wind and voice) elements that MM had issues with before the new release ... but as I added tracks, I found myself with a couple of flow-bombs that changed the character of the mix from time to time ... I definitely can't call the finished set a jazz set, but it does have plenty of jazz influences. The starter is from the soundtrack to the Spike Lee film, Mo' Bettah Blues and Denzel Washington is doing the vocal... From there, you'll hear Jill Scott, Alex Cortiz, Norah Jones, Protassov, Skalpel, Differenz, Jon Kennedy, Gavin Froome, Cassandra Wilson, DJ Cam remixing Miles Davis and Boozoo Bajou remixing Pharoah Sanders ... and much more. Some stand-out moments, in my opinion, are the tracks from Differenz featuring a commanding b-line, and a very muscular number from Protassov ... more in this same vein later in the set with tracks from Ian R. Allen and Gavin Froome. Strong vocal performances on tap from Norah Jones and Bajka in a Ben Mono track ... and then there's a trick transition, going from the slow jazz alto sax of Michael McEvoy's Cycles of Re-elevation into the jangling guitar that accompanies Cassandra Wilson's tune … that transition is demanding and rewarding, all in one. Besides, any time you can hear someone bottlenecking the strings of a National steel guitar is a good time … catching Wilson's voice weaving in and out of that is just perfection. The set winds up with a contribution from the Finnish group Teddy Rok 7, offering the suggestion to listen again and again and again. Let me know how you like it.... I had a half day off work and so finally got a chance to listen to some more music on the site. Im certainly glad I chose BeatConcious as this set, which I heard the whole way through, was excellent. The mixing was smooth all the way throughout and the track selection varied and interesting. It was just what I needed to mellow out to on a lazy afternoon.
If anyone hasnt heard this set yet I would definitely recommend catching it. It should really be listened to the whole way through to get a proper feel for it. Keep up the good work MadameFly!  Relax. What is mind? No matter. What is matter? Never mind! |

No, that's Jill Scott, a voice I really should feature more often than I do ... glad it was a stand-out for you. I think Ms Scott is from Philly ... but do you have any idea where Bajka is from? Thanks to you both for listening and commenting  dani, you really get my drift with your comment about catching the show all the way thru ... I do try and make "programs" and while it's definitely good if you can come in at any point and still find something to enjoy, I usually think a listener will get more of a peak experience by climbing aboard for the whole ride ... glad you could  I got something for your mind, your body and your soul. |
