New for July and clocking in at 1:01 total playing time, Can You Hear Me Now? sports a few more tracks from independent artists I've been following this spring ... you can read more about them in the Declaration of Independents thread.

Leading off with some strong funky tracks from Sanchez Dub and Kid Gusto, the mix heads into jazzier territory with material from NickNack, Duel and Azymuth ... mellow downtempo vibes balance things out, courtesy of J Boogie, Paul & Price, Jose Padilla's Cafe del Mar, and Bliss.

Short and sweet ... let me know what you think of the vibe this one provides....

Hi!

Yes, I can hear your. First much respect from me to take heart to mix downtempo grooves. Why do you do this?
It´s surely much easier and popularier to mix trance, house or 80´s.

Are you female? I don´t know! Many DJs have names that you can´t look through.

To the mix:

When I love downtempo - grooves, I love more the ones to chill. I love fine mixes to chill out. The tracks in this mix are exceptional, but they are bulky. Some tracks I like, other are nerved. The tracks are too special.

This is my faithfully opinion to the mix as a very good music classicist. I hope that you are not angry now, I have only told you my opinion. For me some tracks are too special.

Nice to meet you here at beatmixing.com.

Best regards,
Holger.

Holger, thanks for listening and for taking the time to comment! To answer some of your questions ... first -- yes, indeed, I am female.

Why do I mix downtempo? Hmmmm, well I started out listening to trance/breaks (which are big here in Florida.) Then a house fanatic friend of mine got me started listening to house ... then I spent some time listening mostly to atmospheric drum'n'bass ... and then around 2000, I fell in with the crowd at thedownbeat.org and that's when I knew I was "home" ...

There is so much musical variety in downtempo, that keeps it interesting for me. Additionally, there is more variety in the beat structure, since lots of downtempo is based in jazz or hiphop. And yet in the same crowd you will find people playing spacy ambient that is almost without structure in terms of beats. A little something for everyone Smile

Which brings us to your point about liking the mixes that are "to chill" ... you would probably like the "Space" series, where the tracks are more in a single style throughout the set ... and I agree that when you are feeling like you need to chill, it's better to have a cohesive set that keeps one mood all the way through ....

I'm guessing that when you say "the tracks are too special" you mean that the mood changes from track to track more than your ear is prepared for ... let me know if I'm misunderstanding you.

But I do look at the BeatConscious show as specifically a radio show as opposed to recreating what a club DJ might do in terms of maintaining a consistent vibe for an hour or two. For me, a radio set involves both thematic unity from beginning to end (what a musicologist would call the "narrative arc") but also a little variety in terms of track energy -- even some moments of Whoa! I wasn't expecting that! Wink

For a mix of mine currently on the stream that does a good job of maintaining a mood and energy level throughout the set, I would recommend you listen to Adulthood Redux if you can catch it on rotation ... and I'll let you know when one of the Space sets makes it back onto the stream.

Thanks again for leaving your comments -- much appreciated!

NickNack is a Texas bwah who not only DJs and releases his own original music on the Crowd Control label (you can find posts about all this in the Declaration of Independents thread) but also recently launched the DJ friendly site GIGAcrate offering online music sales ... a must-see site, by and for DJs and musicians -- check it out!
