DigitalEvolution artist K takes on downtempo, working with a Vancouver group known as THE NAME ... the first production to come my way from this combo is All We Are, a classically smooth outing replete with big horns and sexy vocals ... it inspired me to propose a variation on the tag team for the BeatConscious show: I would offer the track to four or five former tagteam partners for a Downtempo Bake-off ... the concept of the bake-off, as you may recall if any cooks in your household ever particpated in one, takes a basic food like Velveeta cheese and invites you to create whatever dish you like, as long as it includes that one featured ingredient ... and so it was with the DT Bake-off. No rules were imposed -- you could use the track anywhere in your set, or if you preferred, you could simply remix the track ...
The first two entries are in, one from Sly Devil and one from your truly ... any additional sets will be posted as they arrive in my in-box, and we'll comment on them in this thread. So ... project proposer starts: All I Had For this set, I simply thought about the "All We Are" vibe and went looking for compatible tracks ... starting on an uplift w/ my new favorite mashup from GoHome Productions, "Marvin's Not in Love Parts 1 & 2" which I have since been told was part of a popular ad campaign in the UK ... as well it might be. Mixer Mark Vidler is a genius and for me, this is his finest creation so far. From that emotional high point, things got distinctly down and dirty, sliding quickly down the featured song and into the Felix Laband track "Dirty Nightgown" with its purposely crackling audio dynamics.... The set also called on music from Australia's All India Radio, plenty of emusic.com contributions including the astonishing "African Fever" by Zoro, off the South Africa in Dub compilation, and a sax-heavy instrumental from Volume 1 of the Buda Records Ethiopiques series. Indie label favorites Tokyo Dawn contribute "Nicotin" from E-The-Hot and NickNack's "Keep Your Soul" makes a return appearance also. Other favorites from the crate include "700 Channels" from Heights of Abraham, the Thievery Corp. remix of "Angels" featuring Wax Poetic and Norah Jones, as well as the mighty mighty Fellman & Louise joint, "The More You Cry", for all the heartbreakers in the audience (you know who you are Next up to 'splain himself (or at least, his Bake-Off entry) should be Sly Devil ... I got something for your mind, your body and your soul. |

"... And All We Shall Ever Be"
My entry for this bakeoff is chock full of DT tracks from all over the musical spectrum. From Native American influences and Afro-Soul to remixed Jazz-Funk (have a listen to Roy Ayers Virgin Ubiquity Remixed album - highly recommended - from which I have used a couple of tracks) and JA Dancehall. Add a couple of quirky tracks by JOL (a departure from his usual Inspirational work) and Thievery Corporation & The Flaming Lips (love the arrangement on this track) plus some ColdCut , DJ Shadow and the showcase track The Name 's " All We Are " and you should have a recipe for some nice, mellow vibes - without the Heartbreak Enjoy Sly D. Add another mix to the Downtempo Bakeoff menu ... Rodney delivers his entry: The Name of the Mix is The Name which, at a little over 30 mins. in length, may qualify as the appetizer course
Mix notes and other comments to follow.... I got something for your mind, your body and your soul. |

I had been listening to Peter Gabriel's album, "Us", and really loved the song "The Blood of Eden", which I believe had backing vocals by Sinead O'Connor. I wanted to incorporate the Peter Gabriel track into this mix, but also wanted the hightlight track to be featured as well. I tried and tried to use the vocals and isolate them as an acapella, but failed miserably. So that plan was put aside.
There is also a track from a disc that was something of a Beatles Downtempo tribute. . . look for a lovely version of "Tomorrow Never Knows" early in the mix. TheBedroomDJ.com Rodney's MySpace My website only sucks a little bit now, check it out. Now with Shoutcast streaming audio!! |
