Whoa, what an interruption there was in the making of this mix ... Charley came callin Eek ... But the electricity is back on now ... until the next storm, I guess ... time to wrap this one up and submit it.

A generous helping of indie music once again, starting off with Brise de soiree d'ete from Luke Mazzeri of Etyrnal; another touch of Afternoons in Stereo with Manihi and closing out with another track from awesome remixer K called JimE which also suggested the title for this set.

In between, you'll hear old favorites like Smith & Mighty, The Dining Rooms (in a Cinematic Orchestra remix outing), Big Muff, Massive Attack as well as the stunning Thievery remix of David Byrne's Dance on Vaseline and more before the fun is over....

I think the mixing in this one tends more toward the "dovetail" technique rather than depending primarily on beat-matching ... though without the benefit of MM's beat matching, it wouldn't be quite as nice, no doubt about that ....

Let's hear what you think....

Haven't listened to that mix yet, but Thievery's remix of "dance on vaseline" is the best remix they have ever done, specially if you love David Byrne's voice since the 80's and I like The Dinnig Rooms since I got Break and Bossa 5, wich contains "Existentialism" one of my favorite lounge tracks ever, so glad to meet people with the same tastes as me, tired of meeting Enrique Iglesias fans here in Spain. Roll Eyes

Why do you use a Jimmy Hendrix's track title for your mix? it contains some cover? I have a deep house one of Purple Haze and I love it.

PD: Technique doesn't mind for this style, those tracks are not made to be beatmatched, do you remember the K & D Sessions? the best downtempo record ever, and the tracks are just joined for a few seconds.

Pepe, the title is a reference to the last track, JimE by remix artist "K" ... when you hear the track (and you needn't listen to my mix, you can hear it on K's website ... the link is provided in the "Declaration of Independents" thread here in the BeatConscious section) you will quickly get the reference.

I do agree with you about the quality of the Thievery remix of that David Byrne track ... as much as Brian Eno / David Byrne / Talking Heads were responsible for getting people who were previously listening to punk or disco ready to listen to a new kind of dance-beat music, it's certainly possible to take their tracks to another level, as Thievery does with this remix ... I love this one.

I think a great deal of downtempo isn't suitable for beatmatching, which is what makes mixing it such fun ... looking for some other technique (or sheer audacity) to make the flow work Wink K&D Sessions is an icon for me....

Maybe someday we can do a tag team and build it around your Purple Haze remix Smile

P.S. The Dining Rooms rock! (In a downtempo way, of course....)

Right, I love that music, Devo, B-52, Talking Heads and a lot more I can´t remember because my "drive" (brain) is now full of new music, but I enjoyed a lot with that, after the punk, it was an alternative to that "noise".
The problem with Hendrix´s cover is that it is on vinyl and I´m still triying to rip them without any distortion, is not easy to get the correct recording levels, but I´m going to give you the track info in case you want to look for it on CD or mp3, you deserve it, can´t believe that a girl is telling me that she likes Kruder & Dorfmeister, are you married yet? Smile

ARTIST: Truant
TITLE: Purple Haze
ALBUM: Neither Work Nor Leisure
LABEL: Paperecordings
YEAR: 2001

Here in the USA in the late 70s, I recall it was punk vs. disco ... disco albums being burned in the parking lots in Middle America ... punk bands would have LOVED to have their stuff burned in the parking lots, of course Wink Talking Heads was an example of where the energy of punk and the dance rhythms and production values of disco came together ... isn't that like the old poli-sci routine, thesis > antithesis > synthesis?

Thanks for the lead on that Purple Haze track ... here's a news flash: you can find Truant and this track along w/ many of their others, on Besonic ... Purple Haze is not available for download, but you can hear it, and I did Big Grin

I can't believe you are telling me it is unusual for a girl to like K&D ... they make some of the sexiest music out there ... their live sets are irresistable for dancing AND for lounging ... what do the girls in your town listen to instead? Good grief!

Oh yes, I remember to watch that on TV, an enormous pile of records burning in a estadium and a lot of people celebrating that while a guy with a microphone damned disco music (after everybody had danced to Village People for years Smile ) I felt bad because I thought there must be some good records in such a big mountain!!
And also I remember the slogan on the earlier punk records: "disco sucks", it was so funny.

You haven´t told me if you like the track, but I´m sure you do.

Here in Spain people don´t have too much musical culture, girls prefer a kind of latin/spanish/pop/commercial music that I can´t stand, and since girls like it men are going to that bars and dancing to it as well, so is quite hard to play good music here, but I guess that music we like is quite underground in America too, where there are lots of Jackson/Madonna/Spears fans, but it must be better than here for sure, isn´t it? maybe because you are very involved in underground you don´t realise that, I do because here is hard to find a good music bar or people being interested in new music.

(listening to Space 2004 RMX) definitely, beauty doesn´t need beatmatching.

Yes, it was a good one ... and made me go dig out my copy of Purple Haze by Kronos Quartet, just for comparison ... now THERE'S a stretch!

Your description of the music scene in Spain could be a description of SW FLA, except that here, the music du jour is pop/commercial/head-banger "alternative" (in DC, alternative used to refer to bands like REM ... down here, it refers to something more like Punk, but less graceful Wink) ... you can hear the latin influence if you head over to Miami, of course.

The argument I would make here is that at least some of the people listen to this stuff simply because commercial radio does not offer any choices ... you can't develop a preference for music you never hear ... in the U.S., college radio stations are generally the only public outlet for musical choice ... everyone else is chasing the dollar and the rule of the chase is: play it safe, don't do anything new, they might not like it....

So, if it helps at all, believe me, it's not so different here as it is there Roll Eyes

I believe you, as I told in my last post, I know there´s bad music in everywhere, but your comment about what are girls listening here "good grief", made me think it should be a bit better in your area.

REM used to be alternative before they signed an 80 million dollars contract with Sony, you still can find 3 or 4 good songs in their albums, once, while we where listen to them, a friend said: "he sings better every time" and I think he was so right, I love Michael Stipe´s voice.

If you want to enjoy his voice in your own field check "Clumbsy" a track that is included in Stéphane Pompougnac´s "Living on the edge" 2003 album, you might know him from Hotel Costes series as he´s the dj and selector.

Also REM, Bruce Springsteen and other artist are in tour against Bush, isn´t great?
(Britney is supporting Bush, maybe this can help you to decide) Wink.

American college radio stations are great, I know about them since early 90´s when they played all the alternative rock I loved, every good group had their first chance there: Nirvana, Sonic Youth, REM (again) etc., then when became popular, majors made offers to them, the majors always want to discover the "next big thing", pack it and sell it, but only when is already a good bussines, never support new groups, they steal ideas from underground all the time.
