OK, so everyone knows the joke, right? Guy signals the waiter to come over to his table and, pointing to his meal, he asks, "Waiter, what's that fly doing in my soup?!?!" The waiter peers at the soup and responds, "I believe it's doing the backstroke, sir."
That has nothing whatever to do with the new tag team effort from yours truly and DJ Mojito, but why pass up the opportunity for a joke Back around the beginning of November, Holger (DJ Mojito, if you don't already know) suggested we work together on a downtempo mix ... it sounded like a fine opportunity to discover whether opposites would attract good music and soon we were off and running ... Despite the time I had to divert to the Christmas show, we've wrapped up our 80 minute excursion in pretty short order ... The musical selections are really all over the map, despite the original proposal for a downtempo mix ... I dropped some Tosca to keep us grounded, but you'll hear 90's rock from Roxy Music and Fury in the Slaughterhouse, as well as trance-inflected tracks and some House influenced vibes as well. Whenever you hear any interesting effects, you can bet that's Holger's work, as he is much more proficient with the effects rack than me (though I have certainly picked up some ideas!) In fact, because of the way we structured the set, you can never really be sure whose selecting you are listening to ... it's not a simple two-on, two-off kind of rotation on this one. Some tag teams are striving for an overall invisible "unity" of the set … for Holger and I, it's more like the trading of riffs between musicians would be in its own context … Holger proposes a couple of tracks, a possible direction, and I counter-propose, but smoothly, of course, because we're in this together, not trying to leave one another with a challenge but rather an invitation…. Look for Holger's comments soon ... and, I think, some album cover art I got something for your mind, your body and your soul. |

It was a great experience to have a first look in downtempo grooves And it was wonderful to work with Gayle! I have enjoyed it, because first at last I have worked at a chilling mix, second because it is a wonderful relaxing set and third because of Gayle - hahaha! It was very nice to talk with her - thank you Gayle! Someday we have to create a pure downtempo mix - cool stuff! Just as well as electro house or so - lol! Really! Like "Kraftwerk" or so! Enjoy this mix - it´s good! |

Ok, but this should really wrap things up ... I remember listening to Sade's third album over and over ... this particular track was scratched, but I didn't care ... I also didn't care that critics didn't rate that lp very high ... oh yeah, and this track lead into a real stomper ("to turn my back on you, now would I turn my back on me", or something, man, i gotta dig for that record) ... Anyway, thanks for sharing, it's been 80 wonderful minutes! free your ears and your mind will follow... |

Thanks for the comments and the listening session, Tom ... here's a tidbit about this mix that you may enjoy knowing ...
As we noted above, it was Holger who proposed to do a downtempo mix and I started us out with some tracks that gave him a stylistic target to hit ... in the end, we had a lot of different musical styles involved ... but he did bring back one perfect downtempo joint, by The MadStrike Project, which was suppposed to have been the closer ... only thing is, you won't hear it on THIS mix ... It was so good that I thought it really deserved to be the centerpiece in a stylistically consistent all-DT mix, so I asked Holger (and he graciously agreed) to let me strip it out and use it elsewhere (fortunately, that album was also available on emusic.com so I was able to get my own copy.) And so we went in the direction that gave us the Amber track, Roxy Music and the others that end up concluding this set. As for that great MadStrike tune, you'll hear it on FreeDubFlow where it is the opening tune, just after the spoken intro .... And that's just one example of the way in which one mix can inspire the next one I got something for your mind, your body and your soul. |

I´m pleased that you have listened to our mix and that you have enjoyed it, Tom! BTW: The mix is also a hit at mix-dj! The Fury In The Slaughterhouse track was the perfect raise after the Roxy Music track from Gayle - it begins quasi to rock! Furthermore I had the feeling that the mix needs a change at this point! Then the Sade - song: a perfect closing! I mean the mix is fantastic indeed - it has exact the correct composition between wonderful ambient, deep downtempo and ballads: so it is never boring to me! I haven´t thought that it gets so good! The tracks act perfect in the mix - so it has to be in a good mix! They build a new bigger composition like a symphony, where many themes build a bigger object too! Thanks again ... P.S.: Gayle, sure I start a mix with the "lost" track! But I have done and do some other projects - then I´m surely fitter for this project! A bit distance, so you have more new ideas for it - do ya understand? ... |
