Something very strange has happened - I'm not the most technical of people, so wonder if those with more knowledge can help.

This weekend, I upgraded my Dell Desktop from an older version running WinME to a brand spanking new Dell 4500 running Windows XP. Both computers have (allegedly) the same Creative Soundblaster Live! Value card installed.

On my old system, I could select dual channel output, "Creative Live value Back" for the main speaker output and "Creative Live value Front" for headphones and everything was fine and dandy.

I've done the same on this new system, and it just doesn't work. I think I must be missing something really obvious, but I can't think what. The speakers are plugged into the black coloured output and the headphones into the pale green output, just like I did before - but all I get is both outputs into the headphones and nothing into the speakers.

I've even gone back and set up my old system again, to check I'm not going mad (I may be, of course, but not in this case). The back of the new Value card looks exactly the same as the old one. I was wondering if I should try and swap them over, but I'm not too thrilled about the idea of messing with Win XP.

Is this an upgrade job ? Does anyone else use the Live Value card and actually get dual output ? All thoughts gratefully appreciated.

If rhythm's a drug, I'm hooked on you...

Try upgrading the drivers for your sound card on the Creative Labs site. If you are still using the driver that came with Windows XP, that could be the problem.

Let us know if this doesn't help.

You may need to configure your soundcard settings to 4 channel output. Open the control panel for your soundcard and make sure it is configured for more than one ouput. If possible, make the settings of your new soundcard identical to the settings of your old soundcard.

Let us know the results.

(Oh, and it is entirely possible that your ARE going madd! But, you won't be the only loone, I'll be in the asylum ahead of you.)

Thanks for the suggestions - neither worked I'm afraid, but I think it must be the soundcard itself as I've swapped the new one out for the old one and can get dual channel output again. (yay !).

Interestingly enough, despite the fact that the cards are billed by Dell as the same version Live Value card, they look quite different....

(It's not a conspiracy when they are out to get you, you know) Wink

Having worked for computer manufacturers I know that some OEM (original equipment manufacturer) components are cut down versions of the retail packages, quite often there will be a chip or two missing ...this way the OEM manufacturer gets incredibly cheap prices yet gets to use the brand name and the kudos that goes along with it.
