I used MixMeister live and realized you get alot of noise out of the built in sound card on the laptop. If I run it on battery the noise goes away. If I plug it in, I get some type of grounding noise.

I think this is created by the soundcard not being properly grounded when the vendor built the laptop.

So, I have ordered an Edirol external USB sound card. I am wondering if anyone has experienced the same problem and if a USB sound card fixed the issue?

I run with a M-Audio Transit, but I still get a hum on one of my notebooks, and no hum on the other. Basically, bad m/b design.

This post has a few thoughts on it.

I use the 3 to 2 prong convertor, and the problems gone, picked 2 up for a $1, at the local dollar store.

hi celtic, read your post bout noise with ps pluged in, here,s a cheep trickto get rid of it ,sometimes works sometimes dont but not gonna cost u much to try, get down to maplins buy 4 of there clip on power line magnets, start with 1 just after the mains plug, clip it on and see if the noise has gone , NO put another just before power supply ,check again, if not 1 after power supplt and again if noise not gon, 1 about 10" before notebook plug in , ,you can then move them up or down till u get rid of noise, even if u get an external sound card u are gonna get noise as soon as you plug powers supply in so the magnets are your best bet at first, hope that helps

Out of interest, is this an explanation/fix for ground loop hum?.

Omlette-

Yes - Lifting the ground is for ground loops.
Plugging the laptop into a conditioned power supply might help too.

Same goes for external Hard drives with grounded plugs.

The magnetic thing is for RF interference.
