Ok so somehow I killed the catalog and playlist windows. Any idea how to coax them back?

Yeah, you probably accidentally "resized" these windows out of existence. If you very carefully move your mouse cursor just above the timeline, your cursor should change to one of those resizing-type handles. Click and drag down, and your catalog & playlist should reappear.
