Hey XXX,

(Is That Vin or Ice? Wink)

Welcome along to the forums.

Members of the forum are from all over the globe, so rather than try and catch you on Yahoo (and in all likelihood miss you, due to time differences etc), why don't you give us an idea of the nature of your problem here?

Then we can not only ALL look at your problem, but once we find a solution it can be posted here for the benefit of anyone else who may have similar problems!

Back to you Smile

Ok I'm trying to launch the webcast but when my friend puts the ip link in the run function to do a test run it says server not available. The only thing I've done so far is to start up MM, select webcast from options and then give him the ip addy. what am i doing wrong?

The receiving computer can't find a webcast
There are a few things you can try in MixMeister Studio to solve the problem:

Make sure that the receiving computer can successfully "ping" the webcast machine.

On the Windows Start menu, choose Run.

In the Open box, type command, and click OK.
This opens a DOS-like window.

In the command window, type ping <mycomputer>, substituting the name of your computer for mycomputer.
If your computer can "ping" the webcast machine, you'll see a reply something like this:

Reply from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128

Try using the hostname of the PC instead of the IP address or vice versa.
On the Windows Start menu, choose Run.

Type either the hostname of the PC or the IP address as appropriate, and click OK.

The above & below are from the Help file within MM Studio 6 - have you tried this?

quote:
To determine the IP address of the webcasting computer

You can determine the IP address of the webcasting computer if you know the computer's name. The name is displayed as part of the webcast address in the status bar of MixMeister Studio. For example, if the status bar says "Webcasting on mms://ABCXYZ:7007 at 128 kbps (local output disabled)," the name of your computer is ABCXYZ. Once you know the name of the computer, follow these steps to determine the IP address:

Go to the computer that is sending the webcast.

On the Windows Start menu, choose Run.

In the Open box, type command, and click OK.
This opens a DOS-like window.

In the command window, type the following, substituting the name of your computer for mycomputer:

ping mycomputer

In the command window, you will now see something that looks like this:

Reply from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128

The text that appears in place of the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx in the above example is the IP address.

Check that you audience has followed these instructions:

quote:
To receive a webcast across the Internet

To receive a webcast across the Internet, you'll need to know the IP (Internet Protocol) address of the webcasting computer. The address will have four sets of numbers separated by periods—for example, 201.22.144.18.

If you need help getting the IP address, see To determine the IP address of the webcasting computer below. Once you have it, do the following:

On the receiving PC, choose Run on the Windows Start menu.

In the Open box, type the following (substitute the IP address of the webcasting PC for xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx):

mms://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:7007

Click OK.
At this point, the Windows Media Player opens and begins playing the webcast. Keep in mind that it may take as long as 20 seconds to buffer and start playing.

Shout back and let me know how you're getting on!

Ok I got all my IP info. Everything like that is set up. But when the person attempts to connect they get an error message saying connection failed. What's my next step?

Where are you getting that IP info? Are you operating through a dynamic or static IP? If you are on dynamic IP, you can't shut down your connection between the time you determine your IP and the time you want to webcast, because the IP will change.

I'm getting the IP info from IPCONFIG in my prompt. I have no idea if I'm static or dynamic.

Someone else can correct me if need be, but I believe the ipconfig prompt is giving you the internal IP for your LAN ... try using an online IP identifier ... I used to use Ask Jeeves, then I bookmarked another utility but I don't have access to that right now ... google one. Chances are good you will see that the one you get from the online utility is different from the one you get at the prompt; use the one from outside your system.

You are static if you are on cable, or if you have paid your DSL provider to give you a static IP; otherwise it is a dynamic IP, changing everytime you go back online. If it is dynamic, you need to use the online utility to establish what it is for the current session, then let your listener know what to connect to.

Let us know how it goes....

Ok I went to some place called findyourip.com and it gave me a different one. So a friend and I tried both IP addresses. Both times this is the error message he got.

Windows Media Player cannot find the specified file. Be sure the path is typed correctly. If it is, the file does not exist in the specified location, or the computer where the file is stored is offline

What's my next step?

In an earlier message, you said this:

Just have to ask ... when you say, "start up MM" do you mean, just open the program, or do you also mean you have the mix playing at the time yr friend is trying to connect?

BTW, what version of MM are you using, what version of Windows Media Player is on yr system and what version of WMP is on yr friend's system? Are either/both of you behind firewalls? The Windows XP firewall or a third-party product?

The devil is in the details Wink

Also, leaving aside the actual MM webcast for a minute, what about the ping thing? Did you and your friend do that, and can yr friend ping yr machine? Here are the instructions that Wildr quoted, which is what I'm asking about:

quote:

In the Open box, type command, and click OK.

No, I have the mix playing. I'm using Pro 6.0.5.0. Version 10 on the media player. As for firewall I have no idea that's why I was requesting real time help lol. I have Verizon DSL if that helps any. I forgot all about having him ping my pc. That's why I was hoping someone would talk to me on my yahoo messenger. So that I can try multiple things at one sitting instead of spacing it up through posts and replies. I want to get this working as soon as possible lol. Even if someone would set a time I would gladly log on to go over trouble shooting. I would much rather test the things with someone who has experience in the matter other than a friend who keeps asking ok what do I do next Frown I have to work tonight at the club so I won't be on again til tomorrow. Thanx for your help Smile

When you get back, check out This Thread -- it is very complete w/ info, it may be helpful to you. I have only successfully done a webcast one time ... it was a bit of a hassle w/ the dynamic IP thing and I didn't go thru all the steps in the recommended thread, but others have ... try it out.

Sorry I can't do the IM thing w/ you and besides, my skill set would probably not get you v. far ... someone else may offer, tho.....

Sorry XXX,

I can't help any further I'm afraid!

Look out for Phreaq (if you're about matey?) or Omlette Brothers (There's only 1 of him Confused), he's on Holiday at present, but I'm sure he'll be better placed to guide you through it!

You really need to find out - basically for webcasting to work your friend needs to be able to connect to port 7007 on your PC, so at it's very simplest (with no firewall) your friend would connect to mms://your.external.ip.address:7007 (type it in file-open url in wmp)

With a firewall you need to make sure that this port is open to his connection and if it's a hardware firewall you will need to set up port forwarding so that when it receives traffic on 7007 it sends it to your.internal.ip.address.

If your internet connection is via a dsl modem on one pc chances are if you have a firewall it is a software one. If you don't know what it is and have XP sp 2 then chances are it will be windows built in firewall. Try turning it off (in the properties of your internet connection) for a few minutes and getting your mate to try connecting again. Make sure you turn it back on straight away regardless of the results.

If you get any error messages at either end please write them down word for word and post them here.

The problem with helping over yahoo messenger is it only benefits you. By posting everything to this thread anyone who has similar problems in the future can also use the info.
